Are You Thinking Too Small?
Sometimes, when God is trying to promote you, it requires stepping out of your comfort zone. We often pray for more, but when "more" starts knocking, it can feel unfamiliar—and even uncomfortable. That’s exactly what happened to Abram.
In Genesis 13, Abram and Lot had to part ways because the land they were occupying wasn’t large enough to accommodate them both. Lot chose a lush, flourishing city to settle in, while Abram, feeling uncertain, wasn’t sure where to go. He wandered, moving from place to place but always ended up right back where he started.
Finally, in Genesis 13:14, God spoke to Abram:
"Lift up your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward."
What was God telling Abram?
Expand your horizon... think bigger! God wanted Abram to stretch his vision and trust in the promises He had set before him.
Sometimes, we find ourselves in similar situations—circling the same paths and hesitant to step out of our comfort zones. We become so accustomed to our routines that we fail to see there is more God has in store for us.
Look Beyond Where You Are
I remember when God spoke to me about leaving my hometown in California and move to Texas. When I arrived in this big city, I quickly settled into my little neighborhood. I established routines, shopped at the same stores, and stayed within familiar boundaries - I was afraid to venture out. But then it hit me—like Abram, I was limiting myself and God. I wasn’t fully embracing the new opportunities God had placed before me.
Fulfilling God’s plans starts with seeing ourselves further from where we are. We have to see beyond what we are used to. God wants to expand you beyond your little comfortable neighborhood, the job you work at and the friends you grew up with.
Get out of your comfort zone
If you want to expand your thinking, you’ve got to step outside of what’s familiar. If all you do is watch TV at home, treat yourself to a play and a nice restaurant. Visit and walk around wealthy neighborhoods. Go into high-end department stores —not to spend, but to expand your mindset. Surround yourself with people who are smarter, further along, or thinking on a higher level. Drive through areas with million-dollar homes and start picturing yourself there.
And most importantly, get around people who are on fire for God and have a vision for their lives. When you stay around people who are stuck or unmotivated, that energy rubs off. But when you're around people who are growing, it inspires growth in you, too.
There is More…
I'm here to tell you there is more. More that God wants for you. Don’t limit God; instead, trust him.
God declared in Jeremiah 29:11, For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
If you feel God nudging you to "go" - whether it's starting a new venture, moving to a new place, or stepping into a new role—trust that He has provision and purpose waiting.
God knows exactly how He wants to bless you—what He’s shaping you into, what He needs you to become, and where He’s leading you. That’s why He often takes us through places that feel unknown or even frightening. But those very places are part of His greater plan. God never intends for His children to remain stagnant, because stagnation means the plan is paused. He calls us to lift our eyes from where we are and trust Him for greater, for deeper, for more.
Reflection:
Are there areas in your life where you've settled, avoiding the unfamiliar?
What steps can you take today to expand your vision and trust in God's promises?
Remember, God's plans are vast, and His blessings are abundant. Lift up your eyes from where you are and see the possibilities.
